HFSA: Sleep Disordered Breathing Puts Heart Failure Patients at Risk

Heart Failure Society of America 2006 Comprehensive Heart Failure Practice Guidelines Recognizes Sleep Disordered Breathing as a condition that puts Heart Failure patients at risk

Patients at risk for Heart Failure require aggressive management of modifiable risks”, cautions the 2006 Practice Guidelines form the Heart Failure Society of America.  For the first time, screening for sleep disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea have made it onto the society’s radar screen.  The soon to be published guidelines, identify sleep apnea along with the common culprits of hypertension, diabetes and obesity as conditions that put Heart Failure patients at increased risk.  Screening for sleep apnea is simple and easy to accomplish and should be incorporated into the care of all HF patients.
